Unbelievably, Phoebe will be 11 in January, and she’s had arthritis for 3 years now (well, probably significantly longer, but we became aware of it 3 years ago!).

She absolutely loves trick training. Just look how happy she is! 🥹

The paw buzzer is one of her favourites, so I thought I’d see if she could open the basket and then press it.

Phoebe says, “Yes, easy!!” 😂👏

Leo has been a very brave boy at his two vet visit

Leo has been a very brave boy at his two vet visits today! He decided he needed a new toy as we left this evening, which I think is well deserved!

After a very rough night, we got an appointment at our vets this morning where Leo was examined and had bloods done.

His weight is continuing to drop unfortunately. The blood tests showed pancreatitis, and IBD is strongly suspected, so he has also started medication for that.

Hopefully over the weekend he’ll start to feel better as the new medications kick in ❤️‍🩹

Unbelievable how Zoe solved the problem of the bottle getting stuck… she’s more intelligent than me, I don’t think I’d have thought to do that!! 🤯😂

I was really just testing whether she could recognise if the bottle was upright or on its side. Nothing could have prepared me for what she did. I’ve never seen anything like it before! 🤯

Have you ever made a mistake before? And tried you

Have you ever made a mistake before? And tried your best to fix it but you couldn’t, so you did the best you could?

Zoe was learning a new trick here and filming a demo video for our Trickdogs Training Circle. After several successful repetitions, she accidentally turned the wrong way. She realised she was supposed to turn the other way and tried to reverse back, couldn’t quite get herself into position, so gave me a half orbit into middle instead 😂

I verbally brushed it off with “oh, good try!” and helped her back into the starting position to have another go. She managed it perfectly after I made one small adjustment of moving my right hand behind my back.

So often I hear people cutting in with “ah, ah!” or “no!” in these kinds of situations, but it doesn’t help your dog at all. It adds pressure, sucks the fun out of training, knocks their confidence and can lead to dogs becoming reluctant to try things for fear of getting it wrong. Which then leads to “he just won’t do it!!!”

I want my dogs to make mistakes confidently. To not be afraid to try.

If they get something wrong, I don’t want their first thought to be “uh oh” or for them to start worrying about it. I want them to keep thinking, keep trying and know that getting it wrong is absolutely no big deal.

It’s my job to set things up better next time round to help them succeed, in this case by moving my right hand behind my back, not make them feel bad for doing the best they could!

This video is incredibly hard for me to watch.

Leo was having the best time trying out his new padlock! He doesn’t look like a dog that’s about to nearly die.

Only 30 minutes after this we would find him collapsed in the garden.

40 minutes later we were sitting in a room at the vets listening to footsteps outside the door, not knowing if the next person to come into the room would be delivering bad news.

Look at the way he’s looking at me. The connection is so strong, indescribable in words, and we nearly lost it forever.

For 4 hours I believed that was our last ever trick together. Such a high to end on, but incomprehensible how quickly life can be taken from you.

By the time we left the vets to go home to check on the girls, his blood pressure was only just holding on fluids. Mentally, he hadn’t recovered as expected and we were told that his prognosis was poor, that he might not be fit enough to travel to an MRI scanner two hours away the following day, and that “a difficult conversation may need to happen.”

They thought something catastrophic had happened in his brain, and having to let him go without the scan to tell us for sure he wouldn’t recover felt completely unbearable.

The following day was also the first anniversary of losing Katie. I couldn’t believe I might lose Leo on exactly the same day, one year later.

Four hours later, when we went to transfer him to VetsNow overnight, he was walking, wagging his tail and knew who I was!

By the next day he was much better thankfully, and it was felt an urgent MRI wasn’t needed. We will never know what caused his collapse unfortunately.

That day has forever changed me. It’s given me a whole new sense of gratitude for every day we get together. It feels like we’re living on bonus time now.

I’m also incredibly grateful to all the vets and nurses involved. I so often see negative things about vets on social media, but they really are superheroes. I feel woefully inadequate not having the skills to save his life like they did.

Sticky bud season is officially here! 🙈 I’ll take

Sticky bud season is officially here! 🙈

I’ll take them over grass seeds any day, although I wasn’t planning on starting my day with a grooming session followed by hoovering the house! 😂

Having a dog who can genuinely relax during cooperative care makes situations like this so much less stressful for both of us. Zoe actually enjoyed her mammoth groom!

Recently I’ve been brushing her ears while she does a chin rest, but on this occasion lying flat worked much better. It was a long grooming session, so she didn’t have to stand the whole time, and it gave me much better access to her ears.

After many years of battling sticky buds, I’ve found that a slicker brush works best. Most of the buds get caught in the brush, and if you brush an unaffected area first so there’s already some hair in it, you can often peel the whole hair-and-sticky-bud mat straight out of the brush. It makes the job so much easier!

As far as I can tell from past videos he’s only been able to pick up 2 cones at a time before… he instantly did this when I set it up for him today!! 🥹❤️

As we went to bed on Tuesday night I could tell he wasn’t feeling well and, sure enough, at 2.47am the sound that makes all dog owners leap out of bed faster than any alarm clock happened.

Eventually he settled back to sleep and, luckily, we had an appointment at the vets at 8am yesterday morning. It was supposed to just be Phoebe’s acupuncture appointment, but our fabulous vet Sarah managed to quickly take blood from Leo to run some tests, including the Spec cPL the specialist had asked us to do the next time he vomited, as well as do Phoebe’s acupuncture!

Leo’s results came through before I left and we were both surprised that his Spec cPL was normal. So, on this occasion at least, pancreatitis doesn’t seem to be the explanation.

His liver has also now fully recovered from the ‘shock liver’ he sustained during his collapse, which is really good news! ❤️

Our specialist vet Simon is on holiday until 10th August, but has very kindly answered my email and we’re now coming up with a plan to change his diet. He’s still losing weight, which is concerning, but I’m sure with a new diet plan we’ll get his weight back up!

He certainly likes to throw curve balls at us on a regular basis! I was so sure his Spec cPL was going to come back raised, indicating pancreatitis. Whether it’s only normal because he’s on a strict low-fat diet, or whether it would have been normal anyway, is anyone’s guess!

At least he’s feeling well again today. If the events of the last few weeks have taught me anything, it’s that you really don’t know what’s around the corner, so enjoy every moment with them that you can. ❤️

Just a little glimpse into the shenanigans I deal with on a daily basis… 😂

I thought it would be fun to combine Leo’s “take off socks” trick with a cooperative care session.

Leo had other ideas and decided wearing the sock on his head was far more entertaining. 🙈

But this little clip actually sums up something I feel really strongly about.

Cooperative care shouldn’t be about getting the job done.

It shouldn’t be about a dog staying still because they feel they have no other choice.

It should be about creating a dog who genuinely wants to take part.

It’s so easy for pressure to inadvertently creep into our training. The moment we become focused on completing the task, rather than how our dog feels about the experience, everything changes.

That’s why I so often mix tricks into our cooperative care training. Almost all of my dogs’ cooperative care skills started as tricks. Without the pressure of needing to “get the job done”, it’s much easier to break behaviours down into tiny, achievable steps, build positive emotions and create dogs who genuinely enjoy the process.

The goal isn’t a dog who simply tolerates being handled.

It’s a dog who chooses to come back for more.

A dog who looks forward to every session, actively participates and genuinely enjoys the whole process.

Because cooperative care isn’t about what your dog lets you do.

It’s about how your dog feels while you’re doing it. ❤️

Friends that travel together and swim together….train together ❤️

Leo was out in the garden while I was training Zoe when he appeared at the cabin door, quietly asking to come in. He headed straight to his bed to wait patiently for his turn… but Zoe had other ideas 🥹

She ran over to him as if to say, “Would you like to join in now? I don’t mind!”

So they ended up having the sweetest little cross-paws training session together. Watching Zoe work alongside Leo was so lovely. She seemed so proud to be training with him ❤️

(And yes, Zoe’s smiling! 😂)

They’ve always got on well, but Zoe has definitely always had a stronger bond with Phoebe. Since our trip to Inverness, and after discovering how much they both love swimming together, it’s been really lovely watching her friendship with Leo grow too.

She still absolutely adores Phoebe, of course, but I love seeing all three of them having their own special bond with each other ❤️

I didn’t ask Leo to do that, but there’s no holding him back now! He’s definitely making up for lost trick time. 🙈

It’s so nice to finally be out walking all together again.

It feels like it’s been forever between Zoe’s surgery, then Leo’s two surgeries and his collapse.

It’s also taken me a while to feel brave enough to take Leo anywhere other than secure fields where we were always close to the car, just in case he became unwell again. I’d forgotten how much he loves these woods.

He’s had a couple of episodes of regurgitating food over the last few days, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on things. Apart from that, he’s full of beans, back to making me laugh and already planning his next adventure. ❤️

It’s so nice having the old Leo back! ❤️

The one who sees something and goes, “Hey, look at me! I can do a trick with that!” 😂 (In this case it was the tea towel I’d just been using to film a cooperative care video with Zoe!)

One of Leo’s vets asked whether he’d seemed better during the week he was taking Piriton after his collapse. I hadn’t really thought about it, but looking back, I realised I actually thought he had been.

We restarted one tablet each morning, but I mentioned to the specialist on Tuesday that it didn’t seem to last the full 24 hours. Most mornings he seemed a little flat and slightly nauseous, then around 40 minutes after his tablet he’d suddenly be like, “Hello! Do you want to play? Train? Go for a walk?” So we increased it to twice a day.

What I hadn’t realised was that by the evenings, he’d stopped asking to train and would just sleep on the sofa. Since his two surgeries, that had become our new normal, so I assumed he was simply settling down for the night and didn’t think anything of it.

Since increasing it to twice a day, he’s back to insisting on having his turn whenever I’m training Zoe! ❤️

There are no words to truly describe it. I often feel it with other dogs too, both my own and other people’s, but it’s stronger with Leo than any other dog I’ve ever worked with.

I think that’s because of everything we’ve been through together. We worked so closely to overcome his fears and struggles that somewhere along the way we built a level of trust and understanding that’s difficult to put into words.

People often think trick training is about teaching impressive behaviours. For me, it’s so much more than that. The tricks are simply the excuse for us to spend so much time together 😂

The tricks might be what people see, but the relationship is what changes everything.
