Phoebe, Leo and Zoe all really enjoyed their sensory sessions @albadogsofaberdeen this morning! 🐾

Leo was feeling really good, but unfortunately started feeling unwell again this afternoon, so we didn’t manage to make it up to Sheilmuir Dog Park as planned 😔

Hopefully he’ll be feeling up to it again soon 🤞🐾

Throwback Thursday to Leo painting 🎨🐾

This is an old video, but it felt like a nice one to share today ❤️

Unfortunately Leo’s CT scan has shown thickening of his stomach lining along with some enlarged lymph nodes in his abdomen, so he’ll be going back to the vets on Tuesday for biopsies.

He’s being a very brave boy through it all ❤️

Tricks are helping him so much at the moment and he’s been really enthusiastic to train this week, which has been lovely to see ❤️

At the moment I’m mostly focusing on keeping things fun, easy and low pressure for him. Short little sessions like this seem to be exactly what he needs right now 🐾

Zoe being….. Zoe 😂

She’s got soooo much personality and always gives me more than I ask for 🙈 I didn’t realise she’d actually fully left the ground until I watched the video back 😂

She’s been through a lot over the last few weeks and had started looking a little unsure about her harness going on, so I decided to do a little “top up” fun session with it… and it’s completely changed how she feels about it again 🐾

The paw buzzer at the end is one of her favourite little tricks and was just there to get her moving, having fun and forgetting she even had the harness on!

I don’t know exactly why she became a bit sensitive about it.

On day 3 after surgery she became itchy/uncomfortable around her staples and was determined to get them out. I’ve noticed a lot of dogs who struggle with harnesses or handling tend to have itchy or sensitive skin. They often become really hyper aware of things touching their body in general - they ‘feel it’ way more than non-itchy dogs!

It could also just be because the vets needed to examine and feel around her abdomen a lot while she was unwell before surgery (right where her harness sits), so maybe she’s made that association… or it could simply be because she didn’t wear the harness for a couple of weeks while her wound healed and now it feels a bit new and strange again.

Either way, this is exactly why I’m such a big believer in regularly putting positive experiences back into things our dogs might be feeling unsure about ❤️

A lot of the training inside the Trickdogs Training Circle is built around this kind of thinking - helping dogs genuinely feel good about things, not just “put up with” them 🐾

It took her a second to figure out what was going on… and then suddenly it clicked and she was like, “ohhh, I got this!”

One of my favourite parts of training is watching dogs problem solve. It’s proper brain-draining, tired happy sleepy dog afterwards kind of training 😂

Leo’s had some difficult days again with his health, but it’s so important to still find moments of joy and make him happy ✨

This is one of the reasons I love trick training so much… it gives dogs something to enjoy, something to think about, and something they can still succeed at and feel good about, even on the harder days 🐾

What a little star she is! 🌟

This was actually filmed 3 weeks ago today… just 5 hours before emergency surgery to remove a pinecone.

She’d brightened up and wanted to train, but shortly after this session she declined again and we headed to the vets, where Leo was already in having a CT scan 🙃

Looking at her now, you’d genuinely never know what she’s been through ❤️🐾

While Leo’s definitely not back to his usual self, this week is definitely significantly better than last week 🐾

It’s so nice seeing him enjoying his tricks again ❤️

One of the hardest parts of having a dog going through health problems is watching the things they normally love disappear for a while… so moments like this feel really special.

He might not be 100% yet, but seeing that spark coming back means everything.

There will probably still be some hard days ahead while we wait for all the test results and figure out the best treatment plan for him, but seeing him like this today made me really happy ✨

Leo would like to thank everyone for their kind messages ❤️

We’re still in the process of getting a diagnosis and figuring out a plan for him. In around 2 weeks we should have a much clearer picture as test results come back and things are ruled in or out 🤞

It started just over a year ago with him finding having his right front nails done slightly uncomfortable. Over the last month or two it’s progressed to significant muscle loss (starting in his neck and spreading to his head and shoulders), along with vomiting, fatigue (he’ll start a walk fine but is exhausted after 10–15 minutes), and he just seems a bit sad and not quite himself.

The good news is he has the best vet team looking after him, and a lot of the really scary things like tumours have already been ruled out.

Today he chose not to train and stayed asleep on the sofa while I worked Zoe. But when we came back in, he got up, looked interested, and we went out to the cabin where he picked up his old puller ring and suggested doing a trick with it 🐾

He definitely seems to be feeling mentally better at least after that little session 🤍

Zoe got her staples out this morning… and within an hour she was doing this 🤯

I genuinely didn’t think this was possible when I started teaching her it on Friday!

She’s not just stacking rings… she’s choosing the correct one!

And here’s the interesting part…

Even though I’ve named them by “colour”, she’s probably not using colour the way we think 👀
Dogs don’t see colours like we do. She can see blue, but the green, yellow and orange look very similar to her… so she could be using size, smell, or just recognising each ring as its own thing.

Most people massively underestimate what their dog is capable of!

Zoe has been an absolute superstar through her recovery and is hopefully getting her staples out tomorrow🤞

We started naming her rings on Friday… and she’s already absolutely smashed it!

She can definitely see the blue as a different colour, but the green, yellow and orange probably all look very similar to her. So even though I’ve named them by ‘colour’, that’s probably not what she’s actually using.

She could be going off size, smell (the dyes might smell different 🤔), or she might just know each ring as its own thing 👀

And that’s the interesting part.

Dogs don’t always learn things the way we think they do…..

I’m hoping after her vet visit tomorrow we get the all clear for a bit more movement and we can test her stacking the rings!

Zoe’s still on restricted exercise, so yesterday she persuaded me to take her to Dobbies to buy some treats.

But then she spotted a toy she desperately wanted…

She looked straight at me like,
‘Remember, I could have died twice last week!’

So obviously there was no way I could say no 😅

Pretty sure she’s decided she now has a lifetime pass to get whatever she wants 😂

Popping the tablets just inside the tube and squeezing them out with the cheese is a very quick and easy way of giving medication. Her antibiotic ones are a bit of an awkward shape, but it still works… Zoe LOVES tablet time 🙈

This was Zoe on Thursday lunchtime, the day after anaphylaxis and the day before surgery (we didn’t yet know she had a pine cone stuck).

I almost cut out the first bit, but it says everything…
“I’ll get you the clicker to speed things up” 😂

Zoe can have as much time off as she wants… she just doesn’t give me any days off 🙈

This is the highlight of her day. What she looks forward to. What makes her feel good, satisfied and mentally fulfilled.

I’m really glad we got a couple of short sessions in between vet visits to help her cope with the stress of last week.

The bond we share is incredible, and I appreciate it more than ever after the two scary events last week ❤️

A real-life cooperative care session to check Zoe’

A real-life cooperative care session to check Zoe’s wound.

It’s not often my dogs ask me to stop, so this is a really valuable video to actually see it in action.

This was filmed on Sunday, just under 48 hours post-surgery.

Lying flat = happy to carry on
Head up = please stop

This is what cooperative care should look like. Clear communication, and the dog having a genuine say in what happens.

When they know they can stop you easily, they can often tolerate considerably more.

It’s a bit like being at the dentist. If I was told I had to lie there no matter what, I’d be out of that chair instantly… but if I’m told “raise your hand if you need me to stop”, everything changes. I feel in control, and I can cope no problem.

I was also very mindful of how I got her up at the end, luring her gently into a stand rather than letting her spring up.

Another skill well worth practising before you ever need it!
