Yesterday we wrapped up our February challenge inside the Trickdogs Training Circle and the blanket-removal ideas were incredible!

“Remove a blanket and…” is Zoe’s favourite trick so she was absolutely delighted to get to have a go today!

This time last week I was seriously worried about her and desperately trying to keep her hydrated enough to stay at home and not need admitted to the vets….Zoe says it’s all a distant memory and she’s back to 110% health!

Circle crew… you smashed this month. Excited to see how you get on with March’s challenges 👀

Zoe goes out with Lynn every Friday morning for a group walk and has done for almost a year now. It’s been important to me, especially after Leo’s struggles following his illness in 2020, that Zoe built confidence away from me and learned to love and trust someone else.

There aren’t many people I’d trust to walk my dogs, but if you can find someone as incredible as Lynn then I’d highly recommend it. Someone I trust to take my dogs out has to be more than a dog walker. They need to be a trainer with the experience and knowledge to build appropriate groups and manage them well.

We are so grateful to have Lynn. The difference she has made to Zoe has been especially clear this week with all her vet visits. I can spend all the time in the world training my dogs, but I can’t turn myself into another person!

Poor Zoe hasn’t been feeling very well this week,

Poor Zoe hasn’t been feeling very well this week, and she ended up at the vets yesterday for an anti-emetic injection that stung far more than either of us expected.

This evening we played the Happy Bucket Game and did a ‘pretend injection’.
She lets me know she’s ready by putting her head in the bucket, and takes it out if she wants me to stop.
As you can see, she was very keen and absolutely loved it!

Hopefully this will help prevent any fear developing around injections, with the multiple positive experiences outweighing the single negative one.

If she ever needs that particular injection again, I’ll use a ‘get it done’ set-up with the vet table and her muzzle to clearly communicate that something unpleasant unfortunately has to happen. That way we can reserve cooperative care for non-stingy procedures, and keep any fear or anxiety to the absolute bare minimum for her.

This is how confidence is built in under 60 seconds 💪

This morning Leo and I were enjoying a wintry walk ❄️ when suddenly a big bag started blowing towards us!

Leo tensed up when he saw it moving so we moved away a little so he could observe at a distance, did a ‘spin’ and a ‘middle’ and then approached the bag.

He went, “I actually think I could stand on it?” 🤔 and on he got.
I didn’t cue him. It was purely, “Do you feel able to offer anything?”

He could have chosen to look at it then disengage, put one paw on it, nose target it or go round it.

I used my location specific reward marker “snack” to feed him in position before releasing him.
That choice was mainly because it was slippery and I didn’t want him launching off enthusiastically to grab a treat. Feeding in position and then releasing him kept everything slower, calmer and much safer 🐾

Leo walked away happily, having conquered his fear of the bag 💪 and ready to head home for breakfast and his morning snooze.

It took less than a minute out of my morning to give him that positive experience, but it had a very big impact on how Leo felt the walk went ✨

If I’d turned back or cajoled him past it and you’d asked Leo how his morning walk went, he’d have said,
“There was this weird thing that moved towards us. We managed to get away from it but I hope it’s gone by tomorrow.”

Instead, he’d say,
“It was great. I saw something odd, I checked it out, I stood on it… and I was fine.”

And that’s the life-changing bit ❤️

Because confidence isn’t about never feeling unsure.

It’s about feeling unsure… and discovering you can cope anyway.

And that changes everything. 🐾✨

Tricks are not just for fun!! 🐾 Yes, my dogs love

Tricks are not just for fun!! 🐾

Yes, my dogs love doing tricks, and yes, it gives them confidence, problem-solving skills, mental stimulation and makes them feel amazing… but this is the real magic ✨

A month ago, Zoe wouldn’t have had the ability to stop herself once she’d committed to something with this much intensity. Now she does 💪

She went to “push” the towel, slammed on the brakes and switched to the rainmaker instead, all on her own. I didn’t ask her to stop; she corrected herself.
That’s her cortex kicking in sooner, helping her inhibit that first impulse and make a better decision. It’s exactly the same skill I want if she ever thinks about chasing a rabbit or another dog’s ball in the park 🐰⚽️

Trick training doesn’t just teach behaviours. It builds cognitive control and behavioural inhibition - real skills that transfer beautifully into everyday life ❤️

Forward focus with distractions… super proud of her today 🐾

We were working on her being able to keep looking forward as I added distractions, and through hearing her ‘snack’ marker (location-specific reward marker which means I’ll deliver food straight to her mouth).

There’s absolutely no pressure on her to maintain position. It’s taken a lot of training to get here, and it’s not something that should ever be achieved by shouting “no” or “ah ah” at your dog in an attempt to force them to stay still.

This comes from solid, clear, consistent training with lots of love and celebration for her progress 🥰

I also think that for spaniels (and other busy breeds!) when we ask for stillness, we need to make sure they get frequent opportunities to move around too!

Zoe’s hardest trick so far…

Some sessions give you big breakthroughs ✨ and others give you tiny steps forward… and that’s absolutely normal and expected! 🐾

If progress stalls for more than a couple of sessions, that’s the sign to change something.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” 💡

For this trick, me sitting straight and delivering the food on the floor meant she had her head down to eat before moving her weight-bearing limbs, and then she took little steps back so she wasn’t doing it quickly and rushing forward.

Small adjustments. Big improvements.

Super proud of you Zoe ❤️

One of the most common mistakes when deciding to ‘train cooperative care’ is that it becomes all-encompassing, and usually there’s pressure involved because the dog urgently needs eye drops etc 😬

Take this as your sign to invest in your relationship with your dog, train all the skills as fun tricks, and then if you ever need them, you can pull together a cooperative care set-up that truly works for your dog ✨💛
