Tricks are not just for fun!! 🐾

Yes, my dogs love doing tricks, and yes, it gives them confidence, problem-solving skills, mental stimulation and makes them feel amazing… but this is the real magic ✨

A month ago, Zoe wouldn’t have had the ability to stop herself once she’d committed to something with this much intensity. Now she does 💪

She went to “push” the towel, slammed on the brakes and switched to the rainmaker instead, all on her own. I didn’t ask her to stop; she corrected herself.
That’s her cortex kicking in sooner, helping her inhibit that first impulse and make a better decision. It’s exactly the same skill I want if she ever thinks about chasing a rabbit or another dog’s ball in the park 🐰⚽️

Trick training doesn’t just teach behaviours. It builds cognitive control and behavioural inhibition - real skills that transfer beautifully into everyday life ❤️

Forward focus with distractions… super proud of her today 🐾

We were working on her being able to keep looking forward as I added distractions, and through hearing her ‘snack’ marker (location-specific reward marker which means I’ll deliver food straight to her mouth).

There’s absolutely no pressure on her to maintain position. It’s taken a lot of training to get here, and it’s not something that should ever be achieved by shouting “no” or “ah ah” at your dog in an attempt to force them to stay still.

This comes from solid, clear, consistent training with lots of love and celebration for her progress 🥰

I also think that for spaniels (and other busy breeds!) when we ask for stillness, we need to make sure they get frequent opportunities to move around too!

Zoe’s hardest trick so far…

Some sessions give you big breakthroughs ✨ and others give you tiny steps forward… and that’s absolutely normal and expected! 🐾

If progress stalls for more than a couple of sessions, that’s the sign to change something.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” 💡

For this trick, me sitting straight and delivering the food on the floor meant she had her head down to eat before moving her weight-bearing limbs, and then she took little steps back so she wasn’t doing it quickly and rushing forward.

Small adjustments. Big improvements.

One of the most common mistakes when deciding to ‘train cooperative care’ is that it becomes all-encompassing, and usually there’s pressure involved because the dog urgently needs eye drops etc 😬

Take this as your sign to invest in your relationship with your dog, train all the skills as fun tricks, and then if you ever need them, you can pull together a cooperative care set-up that truly works for your dog ✨💛

A huge thank you to @ashgrovevets for seeing Leo so quickly today – I phoned at 11.45am and got an appointment for 12.30 with Sarah, who knows him very well!

He started vomiting yesterday and seemed to settle, but it began again this morning and just wouldn’t stop.

He’s had an anti-sickness injection and we’ve started probiotics, so hopefully that settles things for him.

And of course Zoe had to help him hold his medication 🙈

Does your dog love bath time or hate it? 🧼

Zoe is casting her coat just now (which is expected post-spay) and she’s been a little itchy, so today was bath day… and oh my, the amount of hair that came out 😅

Instead of saying ‘no’ or ‘ah ah’ if she thought about stepping out (which doesn’t give the dog any information about what to do), I asked for something she already knows well, front paws up on the bucket. Clear, familiar, and so much kinder than correcting her.

She hasn’t had many baths (unlike Leo she never rolls in any💩), but she stood so confidently and actually enjoyed the whole thing 🐾💛

How cute is Zoe ringing the bells?

We were doing some filming for our Trickdogs Training Circle and she’d already demonstrated ringing them with her nose and paw, which was all I’d planned to film. But then Zoe was like “I could also use my mouth!”
We did a little shaping session and she offered a tiny jump, which I managed to capture and turn into this 🥰

I love how much she loves to train. It makes her sooo happy!

I might need to buy a roll of duct tape to tape their tails down at night… this week Phoebe, Leo and Zoe have all woken me up because their tails were wagging in their sleep. Happy happy dogs! 🐶💛

I only recently discovered he knew the brush end had to go in the pot, and that he can rotate objects from both sides of his mouth. His angled hold is normally to his right for painting!

Dogs know far more than we give them credit for…

Leo uses his right paw to feel where things are when he’s doing complex mouth tricks, or if a toy gets stuck under the sofa and he’s trying to fish it out 🐾
It’s like his built-in problem-solving hand.

Zoe on the other hand… it’s looking very likely she’s going to be left-pawed 👀💛
