Zoe got her staples out this morning… and within an hour she was doing this 🤯

I genuinely didn’t think this was possible when I started teaching her it on Friday!

She’s not just stacking rings… she’s choosing the correct one!

And here’s the interesting part…

Even though I’ve named them by “colour”, she’s probably not using colour the way we think 👀
Dogs don’t see colours like we do. She can see blue, but the green, yellow and orange look very similar to her… so she could be using size, smell, or just recognising each ring as its own thing.

Most people massively underestimate what their dog is capable of!

Zoe has been an absolute superstar through her recovery and is hopefully getting her staples out tomorrow🤞

We started naming her rings on Friday… and she’s already absolutely smashed it!

She can definitely see the blue as a different colour, but the green, yellow and orange probably all look very similar to her. So even though I’ve named them by ‘colour’, that’s probably not what she’s actually using.

She could be going off size, smell (the dyes might smell different 🤔), or she might just know each ring as its own thing 👀

And that’s the interesting part.

Dogs don’t always learn things the way we think they do…..

I’m hoping after her vet visit tomorrow we get the all clear for a bit more movement and we can test her stacking the rings!

Zoe’s still on restricted exercise, so yesterday she persuaded me to take her to Dobbies to buy some treats.

But then she spotted a toy she desperately wanted…

She looked straight at me like,
‘Remember, I could have died twice last week!’

So obviously there was no way I could say no 😅

Pretty sure she’s decided she now has a lifetime pass to get whatever she wants 😂

Popping the tablets just inside the tube and squeezing them out with the cheese is a very quick and easy way of giving medication. Her antibiotic ones are a bit of an awkward shape, but it still works… Zoe LOVES tablet time 🙈

This was Zoe on Thursday lunchtime, the day after anaphylaxis and the day before surgery (we didn’t yet know she had a pine cone stuck).

I almost cut out the first bit, but it says everything…
“I’ll get you the clicker to speed things up” 😂

Zoe can have as much time off as she wants… she just doesn’t give me any days off 🙈

This is the highlight of her day. What she looks forward to. What makes her feel good, satisfied and mentally fulfilled.

I’m really glad we got a couple of short sessions in between vet visits to help her cope with the stress of last week.

The bond we share is incredible, and I appreciate it more than ever after the two scary events last week ❤️

A real-life cooperative care session to check Zoe’s wound.

It’s not often my dogs ask me to stop, so this is a really valuable video to actually see it in action.

This was filmed on Sunday, just under 48 hours post-surgery.

Lying flat = happy to carry on
Head up = please stop

This is what cooperative care should look like. Clear communication, and the dog having a genuine say in what happens.

When they know they can stop you easily, they can often tolerate considerably more.

It’s a bit like being at the dentist. If I was told I had to lie there no matter what, I’d be out of that chair instantly… but if I’m told “raise your hand if you need me to stop”, everything changes. I feel in control, and I can cope no problem.

I was also very mindful of how I got her up at the end, luring her gently into a stand rather than letting her spring up.

Another skill well worth practising before you ever need it!

Negotiations with Zoe on training resumed at lunchtime… and she won 😂

She settled for a go on a bead maze she hadn’t seen before, raised up on a box so she could work standing without having to bend down (the other two usually do this one lying down).

Look how happy she is 🥰

She’s still extremely desperate to eat grass, which was making toileting tricky as she was trying to grab a mouthful constantly. Then it suddenly clicked last night… I’ve muzzle trained her. And I’m so glad I did.

With her muzzle on, she gave up trying to eat grass within seconds and toileted instantly.

We’ll check in with her vet team tomorrow to see if this is something to be concerned about, or if it’s potentially a learned behaviour from trying to make herself feel better over the past few days. She’s not vomiting, is absolutely starving, and seems relatively comfortable.

I’m also extremely glad she’s crate trained. People often say crates are “cruel”… but right now it’s by far the safest place for Zoe unless we’re actively supervising her.

She’s definitely making the most of cuddle time on the sofa too, but stays on a lead just in case she suddenly decides to jump off.

She has been trying to rub at her staples, and while she can just about manage in the crate, she would very likely do serious damage to herself if left loose on the carpet!

This is exactly why I’ll always prioritise teaching life skills like muzzle and crate training.

Zoe is home 🎉

A huge thank you to the entire fabulous team @ashgrovevets for looking after her so well.

In particular Kevin who performed the surgery, Lucy and Catriona the other vets who looked after her, Amy the nurse who was with her overnight, and Ray on reception who was an absolute wizard at sorting out my giant insurance claim, along with everyone else involved in her care.

Very relieved to have her home after a scary few days ❤️

I’m insisting on no training today… although Zoe is definitely very keen.
Negotiations resume tomorrow 😂

Leo would like to thank everyone for asking after him today. He was a very brave boy for his CT scan, and nothing obviously concerning has been found. We’ll get the full report from the specialists in 7–10 days.

His sister, however, decided to make things a bit more eventful… after becoming unwell again last night, she was readmitted to the vets today. Further tests revealed a mass just below her stomach, and she’s since had surgery to remove a pine cone.

She’s staying in tonight, and we’re hoping she starts to feel better tomorrow. What a week she’s had ❤️

A huge thank you to Sarah and Claire @ashgrovevets for going above and beyond today when Zoe suddenly developed anaphylaxis.

She was very sick overnight and had an anti-sickness injection this morning. Two hours later, she had to be rushed back to the vets.

We’ll never be 100% sure what caused it, but an extremely rare allergic reaction to vetemex is a strong possibility.

After giving us all a big scare this morning, seven hours later she was home, acting like nothing had happened ❤️

Leo doing what he loves most ❤️

I know some of you have been noticing that he’s not quite been himself lately, and I wanted to share a little update.

Around a year ago, he started to find me grinding the nails on his right front paw uncomfortable. Since then, he’s developed muscle loss that began in his neck and has now progressed to his head and shoulders.

He’s also showing some other symptoms, including coughing while eating, tiring more easily, and discomfort through his neck and back.

The good news is he has the most incredible team of vets looking after him, and since starting stronger pain relief two weeks ago, he’s been much more comfortable.

We’re still working to find out exactly what’s going on, so he’s going in for a CT scan on Friday.

Mentally, he’s in good spirits, and that’s what matters most ❤️

(Question from Leo… does being a brave boy on Friday warrant another shopping spree in Pets at Home? Although I think he’s pretty much got all the toys already 😂)

Zoe’s really enjoying learning this trick 🐾

But this isn’t just a fun trick… it can completely change how a dog feels about being picked up.

After Leo’s illness in 2020, he would actually pee himself if he thought I was going to pick him up. He was that worried about it.

So instead of picking him up, I taught him to jump into my arms.

And that’s when everything changed.

He had control.
He understood what was happening.
And the fear disappeared.

Now it’s something he loves to do ❤️

If your dog isn’t keen on being picked up, this is 100% worth teaching.

This month’s challenge for our Trickdogs Training Circle: Box Tricks! 📦

Leo:
Standard good boy
Made it look effortless
Cool, calm, collected ✔️

Zoe:
Full of enthusiasm
Pure joy
Added open mouth (her favourite trick 😅) ✔️

I then had the foresight to put a lickimat under the box to stop it slipping before Phoebe’s turn… she may be the oldest, but she’s definitely the wildest 🙈

Phoebe:
Chaotic
200/10 fun
Added a spin (in the opposite direction to which she was travelling 🤷‍♀️)…
which made it significantly harder for reasons known only to herself 😂

All of my dogs can do this trick…
yet they absolutely LOVED revisiting it.

And there’s a reason for that 👇

Practising behaviours dogs already know and enjoy strengthens the neural pathways for those skills…
making them faster, more confident, and more reliable over time.

It also boosts dopamine (a neurotransmitter linked to motivation and reward), which is what keeps them engaged, motivated, and wanting to train with you 💛

So no… training doesn’t always need to get harder.

Sometimes the best sessions are the ones where they already know what they’re doing…
and just get to enjoy it 💪
