Have you ever seen a happier dog? 💛

Navigating the extreme snow we’ve had with Phoebe has been challenging. Today marks 11 days since she’s been out for a walk!

Right now, this period is purely about keeping her safe and sound (literally!), so she’s ready to return to her usual lifestyle as soon as this snow and ice finally disappears (hopefully tomorrow 🤞).

Her lameness and arthritis journey actually began during a snowy spell back in February 2023, almost three years ago. Choosing not to walk her now means she can go straight back to her twice-daily walks rather than risking a flare-up followed by weeks of restriction while we try to settle things again.

So… what do you do when you suddenly have a high-energy spaniel stuck at home all day?

🐾 Trick training
Three short sessions a day to break the day up and keep her brain busy.

🐾 Frozen Kongs
Around 80% cucumber and 20% Years dog food to keep calories low.

🐾 Daily fish skin chew
Lower calorie than many chews and something Leo’s sensitive tummy tolerates well.

🐾 Treadmill sessions
30 minutes a day, mainly walking with a little trotting mixed in.

I’m also mixing in gentle conditioning exercises into her trick training sessions, slowly building these up and keeping a close eye to ensure nothing triggers pain or lameness.

Sometimes doing less outside means we can do more long-term 💛🐶 (roll on Spring!!!)

Because excess weight is likely to exacerbate her arthritis, I’ve also reduced her daily food allowance by around ¼, replacing it with cucumber which she loves and is very low calorie. Such a sudden reduction in exercise can easily lead to weight gain (and she gains weight quickly), and it’s far easier to keep it off than try to get it off again later!

I’m obviously completely addicted to trick trainin

I’m obviously completely addicted to trick training, and even if it had no additional benefits, I’d still do it. My dogs absolutely love it, and it’s one of my favourite ways to spend time with them 💛

But what people often don’t realise is that trick training is about so much more than just “silly” tricks.

It builds confidence, courage, optimism, self-belief, joy, and happiness. It helps dogs feel good about themselves and creates a deep, trusting relationship between us.

This morning we got barked at by a big dog who charged at their garden fence as we walked past. It was sudden and unexpected, and all of us jumped.

Zoe was clearly a little shaken. She had a couple of unfortunate experiences with barking dogs as a very young puppy, so moments like that can still wobble her a little.

There was nothing that was going to make her feel more “on top of the world” than doing a couple of tricks.

We found this rope. She’s never put her feet on something so narrow and wobbly before, but because I only ever ask my dogs to do things I genuinely believe they can do, she immediately went, “Yes, of course I can do that!”

And then she didn’t just do it…
She went, “Oh, I can also do the open-my-mouth trick at the same time.” 😅

She was SO proud of herself.

I love love love that my dogs offer behaviours. It’s an integral part of how we train and how we operate as a team.

And we toddled off home with a spring in her step, a happy brain, and the feeling that she’d just conquered the world ✨🐾

I’ve just had to dig out a toilet area in the garden. Poor Zoe was crying because she had nowhere to go 🥺🐾

Looks like it’s with us for a few days yet…

Very glad we’ve got a treadmill, especially for Phoebe 🤍
The snow really flares up her arthritis, so at least she can exercise safely inside!

Zoe is home and resting after her laparoscopic spa

Zoe is home and resting after her laparoscopic spay today.
She’s still a bit sleepy, but she doesn’t seem uncomfortable and she says she’s starving 🙈

We’ll be having a very quiet Christmas while she recovers 🎄

This is the first time I’ve had the option of a laparoscopic spay instead of a traditional open one. It was more expensive (over double), but I’m really glad we went for it because the recovery should be much quicker and easier for her.

They shave a much bigger area for the lap spay because the surgeon needs a wide sterile space to place and angle all the keyhole instruments. Even though the incisions are tiny, the clipped area looks dramatic!

She’s been such a brave girl today ❤️
