Little clip from our training session this evening when I decided to see if they could do ‘forward’ together!

On the first and third rep I cued it, but they offered the second one and you can see Leo thinking, “I think this is right?” 😂
In fairness, Zoe had a head start because I’d just worked on it with her before inviting Leo to join us 🤣

After being lame for a couple of months, Phoebe is feeling so much better after treatment from a chiropractor!

That being said, she has arthritis and it’s never going away, so we need to be mindful of her exercise, keeping her both mentally enriched and physically comfortable 🧡

Unfortunately, Phoebe has no idea that tearing around a field flat out for an hour will probably make her sore the next morning!

Little games like this mean she can enjoy time outside with us, sniff, explore and feel fulfilled, without asking too much of her body 🐾🤍

This morning Zoe could have had a bad walk, a coll

This morning Zoe could have had a bad walk, a collie suddenly ran at us very fast while barking. It caught Zoe by surprise and gave her a bit of a scare.

She recovered really quickly, and was happily continuing our walk when she suddenly startled again, this time at flower wrapping flapping in a bush! Normally it wouldn’t have bothered her, but because it was only 2 or 3 minutes after the collie had run at us barking, we saw the effect of trigger stacking and her brain instantly saw it as another potential threat.

Once I spotted what it was, I instantly knew Zoe would love to retrieve it! I picked it up, asked her to hold it briefly, which she was very happy to do (the scary object was no longer scary when presented by me in the way I usually ask her to hold things!)

I then placed it back in the bush, and we did some heelwork away from it before stopping and asking her to retrieve it properly.

She was soooooo happy, and enjoyed the rest of her walk, feeling good that she’d rescued the wrapping 🙈

My aim is for my dogs to always finish a walk or training session feeling good, and taking a minute to do a retrieve with Zoe changed her overall experience on the walk this morning to a positive one.

If you came round and asked her if she had a nice walk this morning, she’d probably say, ‘It was so good! I had to perform an emergency retrieve to rescue wrapping!’ and she wouldn’t think to mention the collie, simply a small thing that happened, no big deal, didn’t ruin our walk, still had the best time!

I CAUGHT ZOE’S FIRST SKIP ON CAMERA!! 🎉

I hope dog training never loses its magic for me, there’s honestly no better feeling than when it all comes together like this! 🧡🐾

Zoe was feeling a little unsure about the rope passing over her initially so I approached it the same way I would a cooperative care session.
Her front feet started on the bucket, and if she felt uncomfortable she could communicate by stepping off. If that happened, I would have slowed things down and rebuilt it more gradually, making sure she always felt heard and supported. 🤍✨

Pretty sure this girl just found her newest favourite trick! 😄🙌

Zoe had SO much fun tonight learning to use her new shape sorter… and this is such a good example of how I introduce problem-solving tricks.

The triangular strawberry is easy for her to access at the corner, but still lets her practise the skill that matters most here – rotating the object, lining it up, and pushing it through with intention.

I like to start shape sorters by placing one piece in position so the dog only has to push it through. It immediately highlights the “correct” hole and helps them ignore the rest.

Watching Zoe work it out and clearly enjoy herself is everything. Tricks like this build engagement, focus, persistence… and they’re such a fun way to spend a cold Saturday evening together 🧡

I’m super impressed with Zoe’s accuracy on this!

I recently changed her scentwork indication - her old “freeze” behaviour was just a bit too similar to her sustained nose touch, and she was starting to get confused between the two.

Changing it has given her so much more clarity (and given me a great excuse to geek out over training again 🤓).

This is what I love most about dog training: it’s never one-size-fits-all, it’s about finding what truly works for each individual dog ❤️

And the ending really caught me off guard 😂 I thought he’d just put the last ones in, but nope. In true Leo style, he had his own plan and executed it perfectly!

I was filming an alternative method of using the nail grinder from lie flat (Zoe LOVES having her front nails done this way 💅) when an incredibly loud firework suddenly went off! 🎆

We both startled - and that’s totally normal! Even dogs who aren’t afraid of fireworks can still have a startle reflex.

In that split second, how you respond makes all the difference.
If I’d panicked, I could have created a situation where Zoe started feeling unsafe or unsure. Instead, I immediately paired it with something positive - food was right in front of us 🍪 - and we just carried on as normal.
(She actually got an extra go - we were just finishing, and she was insisting she wasn’t done when it happened! 😂)

If you’d asked Zoe afterwards what we’d been up to, she’d have said:
“Just had my nails done, it was so much fun! 💅 Then we did a bit of hopscotch!”
…not “You’ll never guess what happened - there was a massive bang and it was scary!”

Calm confidence and quickly pairing the sound with something positive can turn a potential setback into just another training moment.

Always expect the unexpected 💪✨

🎆 How did everyone’s dogs cope with the fireworks this week? 🎆

Zoe had the best time playing our Happy Bucket Game (included inside our Trickdogs Training Circle!) out in the garden while the fireworks were going off 🐾✨

Leo and Phoebe are fine with them, but all the extra work I’ve put into Zoe has really paid off - she was totally unbothered, even popped outside for a poop while they were going off nearby 🙈😂

If your dog found fireworks scary this year, don’t worry - now’s actually the perfect time to start building their confidence for next year 💪💛

It’s taken around 6 months to get Zoe to this point, but it’s so worth it. Having previously had a collie who really struggled with fireworks, I can’t tell you how incredible it feels to see a young dog staying calm and relaxed even when it’s noisy outside 🥹💫

I see so many 1-1 clients with dogs around 3–4 years old who have gradually become more sensitive to them over time, so I’ll keep doing little bits with Zoe to make sure she stays happy and confident too 🐶🌟

The progression of a trick!

He constantly amazes me with his ability to figure things out 🤯

Progress is almost never linear and I never expect him to get things absolutely spot on all the time.

I always set him up for success - I aim for at least 90-95% of attempts being successful so he really enjoys what he is doing and doesn’t get frustrated!

If he struggles to get it right twice in a row I will make it significantly easier - either by adjusting the exercise or asking him to do something super easy like touching my hand with his nose or giving me a paw, telling him he’s amazing then asking him to try again.

I pick out the best attempts by giving him his ‘jackpot’ reward - which for Leo is multiple treats and me telling him he’s very clever!
